1917 was a terrible year for Italy, but above all for the Treviso region. The Italian soldiers at Caporetto were defeated by the Austro-Hungarian empire and proved incapable of slowing down their advance. In those days the bishop of Treviso Msgr. Andrea Giacinto Longhin (proclaimed blessed by John Paul II on 20 October 2002), seeing the grave danger looming over the entire Venetian plain, promised that if the Madonna had spared his diocese and Italy, arresting the enemies in the afterlife Piave, he would have erected a church dedicated to the Virgin on the top of Montello.

Asolo's old town is characterized by the fortress (Rocca) from the 12th century. In addition to it, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Villa Scotti-Pasini and the Castello della Regina Cornaro are among the city's main attractions. The remains of an amphitheater and an aqueduct date from Roman times. The mighty Rocca is 15 meters high and between 2.5 and 3.5 meters wide. The defensive structure was built towards the end of the 12th century. A previous building to the cathedral already existed in 969. The church took on its current shape in the middle of the 18th century. Inside you will find Lorenzo Lotto's famous painting “The Assumption of Mary”. The castle, with the clock tower visible from afar, was the seat of the city bailiffs of Venice from the middle of the 14th century. In 1489 it became the residence of Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, whose name it still bears today. In 1798 the large Pretoria auditorium was converted into a theater.

What to see in Asolo: the old town, a place steeped in history and romanticism, enriched by the castle of Queen Cornaro and guarded by the castle, the emblem of the city over which she presides. It offers a breathtakingly beautiful view. Visit the city during one of the many events that offer a bit of everything from art to music to theater. The culinary delights are also not neglected with the sophisticated menus of the city's numerous restaurants and cafés. Before you leave Asolo, you should definitely try a glass of Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG and enjoy the typical snacks called cicchetti and other well-known local specialties such as oil, honey and the products of the hilly landscape around Asolo. Sport: Thanks to Asolo's ideal location, you can set out from the city center on numerous nature routes, including the “Passeggiata di San Martino”. If, on the other hand, you are looking for more relaxation, we recommend the 18-hole course of the Asolo Golf Club, which is picturesquely embedded in the green of the hilly landscape, not far from the city.

Asolo, around 40 kilometers from Treviso and 75 kilometers from Venice, is a wine-growing region. In particular, a quality Prosecco is produced here, the Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG. Since 2009 it has had a controlled, guaranteed designation of origin. Only Glera (85-100 percent) is permitted as a grape variety, with the addition of varieties such as Verdiso, Bianchetta trevigiana or Perera. The grapes must be grown in the Asolo area. Production and bottling must also take place here. The Prosecco is characterized by a straw yellow color, a fine, long-lasting bubble and an intense fruit aroma.
