A suggestive path that from the flat center of Ascoli climbs up the slopes of the Pelasgico hill, or more commonly of the Annunziata, reaching the Pia Fortress at the highest point of the city. It takes its name, like the hill, from the Dell'Annunziata convent that housed the Augustinian nuns, built on the remains of the Roman capitolum, on a terrace located between the fortress and the city and not far from the path of the steps. Built in travertine during the work of arrangement of the spaces adjacent to the fortress, in 1927, the first step is found along via Dino Angelini, at the height of the church of San Giuliano and immediately begins to climb through the houses, until crossing Via Cristoforo Colombo. Here it enters the greenery of the Annunziata park, the lung and refreshment point of the city and continuing through the vegetation reaches the intersection with Viale delle Rimembranze, where caution is advised near the road, which is quite busy and could be dangerous. The route starts climbing again arriving in front of the medieval convent, which we have already mentioned, which can offer a moment's rest after the steep climb. If instead you want to continue climbing, turn right, opposite the sacred building and shortly after, on the left you will find the entrance to the steps again. Here the most interesting part of the journey develops which, after crossing an initial stretch surrounded by hedges, arrives to graze a beautiful Romanesque bell tower, the only surviving part of the demolished church of San Pietro in Cucco. A sharp turn in the shadow of the bell tower brings the steps to graze the ridge that descends towards the Castellano riverbed, widening the view to a wonderful panorama of the city and the mountain above. The last few meters of the road are quite steep due to the roots of the majestic trees that shade the surroundings of the Fortezza Pia, the last destination of this exciting climb through some of the most interesting monuments of Ascoli.
