The Piazza del Popolo got its current appearance around the year 1500, when a systematic beautification of the square was carried out. The entire piazza is paved with travertine and is considered to be one of the most beautiful piazzas in Italy. On the sides of the piazza are the "Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo" (today's town hall), the "Chiesa San Francesco" and the "Loggia dei Mercanti". Furthermore, several restaurants, wine bars and cafes are arranged around the pizza, including the well-known Caffè Meletti - just a beautiful place that invites you to linger and stroll.
At the piazza you will also find the "Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo", today's town hall, which was built around 1530 in its current form. Under the architect Cola dell'Amatrice, it was created by merging three small buildings, with a new facade built in front of them to create a uniform front line, only the medieval tower remained unchanged.
