2월 13, 2026, La chiesa il castello di Saint Germain

Saint-Germain Castle (or Montjovet Castle), of uncertain origins, marked the history of the Aosta Valley, passing from the Savoy to the Challant family, before finally returning to the Savoy in 1438. Used as a military garrison by Amadeus VIII, it was abandoned in 1661 when the garrison was transferred to the Bard Fort. Completing the site is the Church of Saint-Germain: a small Romanesque building that, through frescoes and architectural details, preserves the spiritual memory of the local community.

The Arlaz Waterfall can be reached either from the Col d'Arlaz or from the Orbeillaz car park, following path number 31 which runs alongside the Rû d’Arlaz, a 14th-century artificial canal that channels the water of the Evançon stream and carries it to the municipalities of Challand, Emarese and Montjovet.

Origins and reconstruction The first evidence of the church dates back to the 12th century, with a mention in a papal bull of Alexander III in 1176. The original building, from the Gothic era, was oriented on the east-west axis and had an apse structure facing east. Over the centuries, the church underwent several modifications, until a complete reconstruction between 1870 and 1873, designed by the architect Giuseppe Lancia. During the restoration work in 2010, the foundations and perimeter walls of the ancient church emerged, visible today through a glass window in the crypt. Architecture and decorations The facade of the church is distinguished by a large central portico with a pointed arch, surmounted by a triangular tympanum. Above the main portal, a large fresco depicts San Maurizio dressed as an Egyptian general. The two lateral sections of the facade house niches with statues of saints. Inside, the single nave is decorated by the Artari brothers of Verrès, well-known local artists. The church preserves four wooden altars from the 18th century, coming from the ancient structure, and a reliquary from the 15th century. Particularly significant is the statue of the Pietà, in carved and painted wood, dating back to the 16th century. The pulpit, carved in panels, dates back to the first half of the 19th century. The high altar and the organ The high altar houses an altarpiece dedicated to San Maurizio, made in 1931 by the painter Carlo Morgari, known for his works in numerous churches in the Aosta Valley. The wooden choir is a 19th-century work by Reirosa d'Ivrea, while the organ, built in 1896 by the Vegezzi-Bossi company of Turin, is composed of about 1000 pipes and is used during concerts and celebrations. The view from the churchyard Looking out from the churchyard, the view opens onto a wide and suggestive panorama. Brusson stretches gently into the valley below, framed by the larch and fir woods that cover the slopes. In the distance, the peaks of the Val d’Ayas dominate the horizon, often snow-capped even in spring.

The castle of Saint-Germain was built between the 11th and 12th centuries by the De Mongioveto family, probably to control the road below and to convince travellers to pay them a toll. The central keep and a first circle of walls date back to this period, perhaps on a pre-existing structure. In particular, Feidino De Mongioveto seems to have been particularly tenacious and oppressive in demanding the toll, to the point that the Duke of Savoy had the pretext to take over the fortress. The castle did not remain in the Savoy family for long. The fief of Montjovet, and therefore the castle, witnessed the rise of the Challants when in 1295 it became the property of the family. Francesco di Challant, advisor to Duke Amedeo VIII of Savoy, brought the castle back into Savoyard hands in 1438, ceding the castellany of Montjovet with the castle, the lands and the village. Amadeus VIII and his successors contributed to making the castle increasingly efficient by updating it to new military techniques. The new city walls, battery positions, turrets and cannon positions date back to this period. In 1661 the castle was abandoned and artfully demolished to prevent foreign troops from stationing there, at the behest of Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy, while the garrison was transferred to the fort of Bard. At the beginning of the 18th century it finally fell into ruin. Today the castle of Saint-Germain is owned by the Aosta Valley Region.

Emarese is located on a beautiful plateau that is sunny all year round. The village has beautiful stone houses, many of which have been renovated respecting the original materials and architecture. On the walls of some of these houses, reproductions of period photos have been hung, showing the faces of the people who lived in the village in a past that is becoming increasingly distant.

The origin of this bridge is uncertain, but it was probably built in Roman times. The first documents mentioning this bridge date from the second half of the 13th century. From 1272 onwards, the bridge was called Hôhne Bridge or Bard Bridge in Latin and then in Old French. Apart from its history, the bridge is a beautiful photo point of Fort Bard.

In addition to many temporary exhibitions, often aimed at promoting and learning about the culture and territory of the Aosta Valley and the Alps, the Forte di Bard includes three permanent museums. 1.) On the top floor is the Museum of the Alps. Here the secrets of the mountain have been presented through a multimedia path and interactive installations. A truly worthwhile and informative museum!!! 2.) A second museum room is dedicated to the prisons of the fort, twenty-four narrow cells (1.3 x 2 meters) distributed in four areas and accessed from a gallery decorated with historical prints and paintings that tell the story of the building. 3.) Finally, the Fortress and Border Museum of the Opera Ferdinando offers a journey through the history of the Bard through a parade of historical and plastic weapons, including scale models of defensive structures and miniature armies.
