The archaeological finds in this cave were fundamental in giving the name to the pre-Nuragic culture of Bonu Ighinu (the name of this area), which developed in Sardinia during the 4th millennium BC. (4000-3400 BC). It is considered the first culture in Sardinia to have used natural cavities as sepulchres, which then formed small necropolises.

From the small lookout on the western side of Monte Traessu you can enjoy a spectacular view towards the Temo valley, Monte Minerva, Monteleone Roccadoria, Villanova Monteleone and Romana

In 1901 work began on a new monastery, the inauguration of which took place on June 4, 1908. On October 4th, 1957 the parish of San Francesco di Ittiri was founded. In 1978 the church was renovated.
