Located in the heart of the Upper Valdarno, Mercatale Valdarno is a historic village that owes its name to its ancient role as a "mercatale," a vital market place and crossroads for trade between the surrounding valleys. Today, it serves as a picturesque gateway where the Arno plain begins to rise toward the cultivated hills.

The Galatrona Tower is an imposing 27-meter-high brick and sandstone watchtower, the only remaining vestige of a strategic 10th-century castle in Valdambra. Climbing its five interior floors, visitors can reach a panoramic terrace offering spectacular 360-degree views of the Tuscan landscape, from the Chianti mountains to the Arno Valley. It is open to visitors from April to October, generally on Saturdays and Sundays.

Easy trail to tackle on a mountain bike

A quiet trail for mountain biking, with some small, slightly more technical sections, but recommended for everyone.

In Setteponti, shortly after Poggio Bagnoli coming from Arezzo, there is a fork on the left and immediately a dirt road, but in excellent condition. Climb of just under 3 km, gentle with only a few steeper points. At the top, views of both sides, Valdambra and Valdarno.
