Bevagna / Region – Umbria / Province – Perugia (PG) Surrounded by city walls with towers and gates, the town has an intact medieval structure (12th-13th centuries). Numerous remains from the Roman period can still be seen in the upper part of the town: the remains of a temple, the theater, and a thermal bath, of which a frigidarium with a magnificent black-and-white floor mosaic depicting marine figures from the 2nd century AD has been preserved. The medieval urban structure, with squares and noble houses, developed above the layout of the Roman town: On the magnificent Piazza Silvestri are the Palazzo dei Consoli (1270), which houses the Torti Theater, the Romanesque churches of S. Silvestro and S. Michele Arcangelo, both from the late 12th century, and the Church of S. Domenico e Giacomo (1291). Worth seeing is the Palazzo Comunale (late 18th century), which houses the historical archives, the library, and the art gallery. The Baroque churches of the Monastery of St. Margherita and St. Filippo are also very interesting. At the highest point in the town is the Church of St. Francesco (late 13th century). Next to the altar, you can see the stone on which St. Francis knelt while preaching to the flock of birds at Pian d'Arca. The 18th-century Palazzo Lepri houses the Bevagna Museum, with works that tell the story of the town from pre-Roman times to the 18th century: archaeological finds from the ancient site of Mevania, medieval documents, and paintings by Dono Doni, Fantino, and Corrado Giaquinto. In the surrounding hills, the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie (late 16th century), the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Valle, and the Monastery of the Annunziata (11th century), formerly a defensive castle, stand out. Eremo delle Carceri, the resting place of St. Francis, Assisi The Eremo delle Carceri is a pilgrimage site located in the dense forest of Monte Subasio, about 4 km from Assisi and at an altitude of 800 m. St. Francis and his first brothers imprisoned themselves for devotion, living a simple life, and praying more devoutly. The word "carceri," which may be confusing, does not mean "prison" but comes from the Latin "carcer," meaning a solitary, isolated place. This is where the term "carcerare" comes from, referring to monks and describing their practice of retreating to pray as hermits. In 1215, Benedictine monks donated the Eremo delle Carceri to Saint Francis, which became one of the most important places in his life: Immersed in a quiet, peaceful, centuries-old holm oak forest, Saint Francis followed his calling here and learned to pray devoutly. The Grotto of Saint Francis, among stories and legends Through a narrow passage, one reaches the Grotto of Saint Francis, where, according to the history of Francis of Assisi, the saint experienced his first true meditation and became a different person. Another story is that of Saint Rufinus, a companion of Saint Francis who managed to resist the devil. It is said that the hole in the grotto floor was caused by the devil when he was defeated and sank into the abyss. Many mistakenly believe that St. Francis's famous sermon to the birds took place here, but historical sources definitively link the legend to Piandarca, a town in the municipality of Cannara. Hermitage of the Prisons, Assisi The Shrine of the Hermitage of the Prisons An ancient Franciscan shrine on Monte Subasio, 4 km from Assisi and 800 meters above sea level, in the heart of a forest of centuries-old holm oaks, is one of the Franciscan shrines guarded by the Friars Minor of the Seraphic Province of Saint Francis of Assisi. The word "carcere" does not mean "prison": it comes from the Latin "carcer," meaning a remote, solitary place, therefore suitable for the life of prayer. Francis, his companions, and, after them, the friars, came here for some prayers. Hermitage of the Prisons, Via Eremo delle Carceri, 38, 06081 Assisi PG, Italy Text/Source: SERAPHIC PROVINCE OF ST. Spello is something of an insider tip for a holiday in Umbria. The nearby towns such as Perugia or Assissi are more likely to be the places to go for holidaymakers. With its walls, churches, houses and alleys, which are mostly brightly and colorfully decorated, Spello offers a wonderful stay that should not be missed. It is not for nothing that Spello is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

Unfortunately, poor maintenance is making it difficult to travel in some sections, especially due to the increasingly invasive vegetation. Update: today, May 31, 2024 I traveled along it and with amazement (not much) I was able to see that all the brush along the route had been mowed, the upcoming elections have worked a miracle!!!!🤮

Spello is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and not without reason. As an ancient center of Umbrian origin, Hispellum was in the 1st century BC. It was an important Roman community in the 1st century BC and had the title “Beautiful Julia Colony”. Here you can find important and impressive evidence from the Roman era in keeping with the current medieval appearance of the city. Spello is located on a southern slope of Monte Subasio between Assisi and Foligno and is a member of the club of the "most beautiful cities in Italy" due to its considerable cultural, artistic and natural heritage.

The cross at the summit of the Sasso Piano (Croce di Sasso Piano) at 1124 m stands on a grassy saddle and offers the hiker a breathtaking panoramic view of the Umbrian landscape and the old town of Assisi at its feet. There are also beautiful views of Monte Tezio and Monte Acuto (N-W), Perugia and Lake Trasimeno (W-N-W), whose reflections are only visible in the afternoon, the saddle of Torgiano (W), the wooded hills of Bettona (W-S-W ), in the background the Martani Mountains (S-S-W), on the Bevagna (S) and Foligno (S-S-E) valley sections. The large, massive limestone boulders on the plateau appear to have been shaped for the use of hikers, who find this an ideal place for rest and reflection. "Cities, villages, castles, churches, farmhouses, rivers, streams, blue forests, lonely peaks, rich pastures, gentle olive groves, arduous plains appear from above as if in the magic of a vision" (Arnaldo Fortini).

The small hermitage “Eremo delle Carceri” is located a good five kilometers from the center of Assisi at the foot of the Monte Subasio mountain. In ancient times, the Latin word carceres meant not only a place of punishment, but also a place of retreat, penance and solitude. This is exactly what Francis and his confreres did when they built the small Cappella di S. Maria (Chapel of St. Mary) and retreated into the natural grottoes and gorges that the nearby mountains offered them to pray and pray meditate. Over time, the Franciscans, who have always administered Eremo, added other buildings to the small complex. The building took on its final form in the 19th century.

The aforementioned cycle path is very beautiful were it not for the recent excessive growth of grass along the edges which prevents it from being used easily due to the lack of maintenance by the Umbrian land reclamation. Such a pity.

Wandering the narrow streets of Bevagna is like traveling back in time. The fortified historic center is an open-air museum to admire the characteristic architectural styles of central Italy: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque. The charm of the citadel is enriched by the presence of the turquoise waters of the river Timia (or Clitunno) which almost make it look like an island. At the end of June, the citadel takes a leap in time with the medieval festival of the Mercato delle Gaite, a truly unique experience.

Located in the very heart of Umbria, Bevagna is on the western edge of the plain of Foligno, at the foot of the hills where Montefalco rises, near a bend in the Timia River. The hill of the Umbrian valley were the city was built is surrounded by fertile plains rich with water where grain, vineyards and olive groves grow. It is a member of the Most Beautiful Towns of Italy club for its environmental, cultural and artistic heritage.

"Around Assisi one always comes across hermitages ... which play a special role in his life. The closest ones to Assisi are the Carceri ... Carceri - for Francis, this word has nothing to do with flight from the world. He chooses these days and weeks of silence and solitude not out of weariness or even fear of life. Not because he can no longer cope with his life. Not because he wants to get off the world. Perhaps we can put it this way: Francis needs the time to be alone with himself and with God in order to be able to exist in the world. Here he gets the decisive powers that help him to be able to go his own way. (...) Carceri - the word means for Francis: in this place I can regain my strength. Francis is aware that a person cannot only give and spend. (...) Carceri - for Francis, this word also means: silence in which he can gain clarity about his life's path. (...) Because Francis - like Jesus - wants to be obedient to God. But he can only do that if he is a 'hearer', if he keeps trying to listen to what God wants to say to him - and God is someone who speaks in soft whispers rather than in a stormy wind; whose voice is more likely to be heard in silence and solitude than in the noise and hustle and bustle of everyday life." If you stay in Assisi for several days, you should not only visit the classic downtown destinations that all guests call at; but a trip to Monte Subasio above the city is also highly recommended. There is the hermitage "Eremo delle Carceri" called Carceri. San Francesco (Saint Francis of Assisi) liked to go to this place to retreat to the solitude of the mountain and be alone in prayer with God.

Spello is an enchanting town to visit all year round and is included in the list of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy". Spello is best known for the flower displays created every year on the occasion of Corpus Domini. The streets of the village are covered with paintings recreated with petals and flowers created by artists and inhabitants of the village. The village is still surrounded by well-preserved Roman walls, in which three gates open: the Urbica gate, the Consular gate, from the 1st century BC, and the Venus gate.
