A detour from the circular trail to the ancient and mighty Hutebuche is worthwhile. Hudewälder (forests), also called Hutewald (forests), are an ancient form of forest management in which livestock were driven into the forest for grazing ("hutting"). The pigs and cattle ate beechnuts, acorns, and herbs, thus preventing natural forest regeneration. Only a few, now very old and mighty trees with spreading crowns remained standing. However, another traditional farming forest use, the "Krattwald" (forest), seems to have led to the emergence of this Hutebuche. According to this, it was "cut back to the stump" every 15 to 20 years, resulting in increasingly voluminous new shoots. The harvest had a variety of uses: the bark was used for tanning, the wood as building material and fuel, and the leaves as fodder and bedding for livestock. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutebaum

The current church was built between 1875 and 1879 in the center of the old town on the foundations of a previous building. Between 1974 and 1977, it was extensively remodeled with funding from one of the GDR's church building programs, at a cost of 480,000 Deutschmarks. The fishery is located in Zarrentin, directly on Lake Schaalsee. A wide range of offerings awaits you: You can treat yourself to a delicious fish snack here. There are various types of smoked fish and also fish sandwiches, which you can enjoy from the terrace overlooking Lake Schaalsee. Custom-made fish platters are available for your celebration upon request. We have been awarded the regional label for the sale of fish and fish products from Lake Schaalsee (whitefish, pike, bream, tench, burbot, crayfish, roach, eel, carp / smoked fish / meatballs / aspic). Fisherwoman Diana Rehbohm and her team look forward to your visit.

The beach is supervised in the afternoon when the weather is suitable for swimming. The outdoor pool is free and open Monday to Sunday year-round. Due to its four decades of isolation as a restricted area along the inner-German border, numerous endangered animal and plant species have been able to maintain their natural habitat at Schaalsee. Therefore, swimming is only permitted at designated bathing areas.

The water in Schaalsee is of good bathing quality and the water slide in the lido is a little highlight, especially for children. Instead of being in a crowded outdoor pool, it's wonderful to have plenty of space when swimming.
