The biblical origin for this can be found in the Gospel of Luke, where Simeon says to Mary about her son Jesus Christ: "Look, this child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and he will be a sign that will be spoken against, and a sword will pierce your own soul..." (Luke 2:34-35)
