The parish church of Santo Stefano stands in the village of Menaggio, where the Strada Regina once passed, a short distance from Lake Como. Construction of the church began in 1618 on the ruins of earlier Romanesque buildings, and its orientation was changed by moving the façade toward the lake. The church was enlarged, with a lengthwise layout featuring three naves and six side chapels. The work was carried out thanks to donations from the wealthy Calvi family of Menaggio.
