Who was Vicelin? Vicelin (c. 1086–1154) was a Christian missionary and later Bishop of Oldenburg in Holstein. He is considered the "Apostle of the Wagrians and Holsteins" because he evangelized the Slavic and Saxon populations of present-day Schleswig-Holstein in the 12th century.

Today's Significance With its 40-meter-high tower, the Vicelin Church is visible from afar and remains the spiritual center of the community today. Modern stained-glass windows, a richly decorated interior, and the park-like church grounds make it a cultural and spiritual attraction.

Historical Origins St. James's Church in Bornhöved was consecrated in 1149 by Bishop Vicelin in the Romanesque style and has dominated the town center ever since. Archaeological finds even indicate a predecessor chapel dating back to around 980, making it one of the oldest religious buildings in the region.

Pretty, small church with a beautiful park setting

The Peace Oak in Bornhöved was only planted in 1895 to commemorate the war with France in 1870/71. Peace oaks are oaks that were planted as memorial trees to commemorate a war won and the peace that followed. In Germany, these were mainly planted as a memorial to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The planting of peace oaks took place mainly in central squares or green spaces in the places concerned. In the late 19th century, many streets and restaurants were named after the tree that gave it its name, with names such as "Peace Oak", "To the Peace Oak" or "at the Peace Oak". Many of the Peace Oaks are no longer recognizable as monuments today, unless memorial stones or plaques mention their history. Adolfplatz in Bornhöved contains 5 of 13 Bornhöved monuments. One of them is the Sventanastein, erected here in 1927. It commemorates the victory of the Obotrites, allied with Charlemagne, over the pagan Saxons in 798 and documents that the Schwentine rises near Bornhöved (= source head). The place bore the Slavic name Sventana = holy land until around 1100. The Limes Saxoniae also ran here, which was an unfortified border that separated the Frankish sphere of influence in Saxon northern Albingia from the area of the Slavic Abodrites from around 809.
