11월 13, 2024, Centrale Idroelettrica Carlo Esterle
The Esterle hydroelectric power plant, located on the right bank of the Adda River, began operating in 1914. It is dedicated to the memory of Carlo Esterle, Edison's managing director until 1918. The building, particularly known for its beauty, is constructed in a style derived from the eclectic Lombard tradition. The meticulous ornaments, the geometric and floral motifs, the columns and capitals at the entrance, the wrought iron street lamps and the imposing Gothic-style windows make it appear more like a villa than a real industrial building.

Large wheel on the bank of the Naviglio Martesana, popularly called "rudun", was built by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1618 to raise the water from the canal and bring it to the kitchens of the palace as well as irrigating the vegetable gardens and gardens of the villa.

«[...] A canal was built from the castle of Trezzo to the city, and it was called della Martesana, the county that passes through. [...]» The Naviglio della Martesana, also known as Naviglio Piccolo, is one of the Milanese canals that connects Milan with the Adda river from which it receives its waters in Concesa just downstream of Trezzo sull'Adda.

The Alessandro Taccani hydroelectric power plant is a work of architectural art located in Trezzo sull'Adda, along the right bank of the Adda river. Founded by industrialist Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, the plant has been generating clean and sustainable energy for over a century. Every year, it produces around 60 million kilowatt hours, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 24 thousand families. Behind her, the medieval castle of Trezzo, with its 42 meter high square tower towering above it.

The water wheel is located in the center of Groppello, a hamlet in the municipality of Cassano d'Adda, on the bank of the Naviglio della Martesana. This large water wheel was built in Groppello by Carlo Borromeo, with the aim of raising water and channeling it to the gardens of the Villa Arcivescovile. Even today it is popularly nicknamed "Rudun" and was restored and put back into operation in 2009, with only educational functions at that point.

The Visconti castle is the very emblem of Trezzo sull'Adda. It stands on a promontory surrounded by the river, a strategic position already intuited centuries earlier by the Lombards and has become increasingly important over the centuries. Frederick I, known as Barbarossa, built his fortress here in the 12th century. Bernabò Visconti died here on 19 December 1385 after imprisonment, poisoned with a plate of beans by his nephew Gian Galeazzo, who aspired to power.

The place is very beautiful and characteristic and is also located near a fountain where you can get water. In addition, someone has set up a stand, minimalist but very useful, with some tools to fix your bike. If you need to recover energy, there is an ice cream shop next door. In short, a strategic point. Update to the last round of October 2024: the stand with the tools seems to be gone. The rest is as I left and described it.

From the 11th to the 16th century, other fortifications were added and the complex became a valuable outpost of the Duchy of Milan. In the second half of the twelfth century Frederick Barbarossa expanded the fortress and used it as one of his residences. In the fourteenth century Barnabò Visconti, lord of Milan, took the fortress from the Torriani and rebuilt it in 1370. It is in this new fourteenth-century guise that it has come to us. During the Spanish domination of Lombardy (16th and 17th centuries) the fortress was used as a prison, and then fell into a period of neglect. Since 1805, the manor has been used as a quarry for already squared materials for the civic arena of Milan and some Monza appurtenances of the royal villa. Only in the middle of the century did the owner Giovanna Borghi suspend dismantling at the Trezzo castle, restoring the climb to the tower. In 1891 the fortress was purchased by Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, owner of the Crespi d'Adda cotton mill. The castle is currently owned by the Municipality of Trezzo sull'Adda.

According to tradition, it was built in the early Middle Ages by Queen Teodolinda, queen of the Lombards (between the 6th and 7th centuries). Barnabò Visconti was locked up there until his death by his nephew Gian Galeazzo, who had ousted him. The castle underwent a serious period of decline in the nineteenth century, when it was even transformed into a quarry for already squared building materials. It is currently used as a backdrop for open-air cultural and artistic events.

To be precise, the hydroelectric plant is called TACCANI (Treccani is the encyclopaedia) from the name of the designer. Alessandro Taccani (1876-1947) was a young graduate in industrial engineering from the Istituto Tecnico Superiore in Milan, when Cristoforo Benigno Crespi involved him to build his hydroelectric plant along the Adda. A great officer and knight of labour, the engineer Taccani was president of the consortium for the alienation of electrical materials left over from the war (1920-1924) and was commissioner for Italy at the Basel exhibition (1926). Taccani disappeared on 8 July 1947 at the Gavazzeni clinic in Bergamo.

"The Esterle power plant was particularly well looked after from an architectural point of view since it had to be representative of the Edison company that had built it. It appears more like a Lombard villa of delight than a real industrial apparatus. The effort was remarkable. integration of the building into the surrounding area, completed in the early years of the twentieth century, during the construction of the power plant.Today it represents a significant example of monumental industrial archeology and is known for its particular beauty. The building, built in a style derived from the Lombard eclectic tradition, consists of a large rectangular body with a gable roof inside which the engine room is located. It is characterized by meticulous ornaments, strictly repeated geometric and floral motifs. The columns and capitals at the entrance, the lampposts and the finely wrought iron eaves together with the impressive Gothic-style stained glass windows, make the building a precious architectural jewel. Inside, the walls and ceiling of the engine room were decorated with great care, as are the floors, street lamps, lamps and numerous wrought iron furnishings. In addition to the main building there are two adjacent volumes: the first, towards the river, constitutes the entrance to the engine room while the second, on the opposite side, is the arrival room of the penstocks. On the hill behind the plant there is a third body that encloses part of the loading basin and the inlets of the penstocks that feed the turbines.
