A must-see stop at the little church even if you are not a believer, with Gregorian chant music in the background.

The white wine of the same name, Soave, is named after the city. The place is said to have been founded around 500 AD by a tribe of the Suevi, from which the place name is derived. However, the area had already been inhabited during Roman times and was located on the important Roman road Via Postumia. The castle was first mentioned in documents in the 10th century. It belonged to the Sanbonifacio of Verona and passed to the Scaligeri in the 13th century. In the years that followed, Soave and its castle changed hands several times.

Beautiful city surrounded by imposing walls in perfect condition that completely enclose the historic center. Very well maintained by the local administration and it was not for nothing that it was awarded the most beautiful Borgo dei Borghi in Italy in 2022! Here the Soave wine is the master between cellars, wineries, taverns, etc. Not to be missed….

Many people only know the word Soave in connection with wine, which is generally true, but there is more! The wine route on which the small town is located was founded in 1999 and includes 13 communities. It is approximately 50 km long and runs at the eastern end of the province of Verona. With 24 D.O.C. growing regions, Veneto is the leader in Italy and it's hard to know where to start. with around 7,000 inhabitants - is framed by a completely preserved city wall with 24 towers. And no matter which direction you come from - the Scaliger Castle on the hill above the city is unmissable, right in the middle of the vineyards People settled here as early as the Stone Age and the Romans built a fortress to protect their rural districts. Today's city center was built under the Lombards and is therefore over 1,450 years old. Emperor Frederick I, known as Barbarossa (the one with the red beard), mentioned Soave as early as the Middle Ages around 1,200.

Found a small restaurant on the old city wall with really reasonable prices. Ate outside under umbrellas. I don’t want to advertise, but the restaurant is called “Trattoria alla Rocca” and it was very tasty 🤤

9월 29, 2021, Vista sul castello di Illasi
Built in the 10th century, it became the property of the powerful Montecchi family in the 13th century. The castle was rebuilt and strengthened by Ezzelino III da Romano in 1243. In 1269 the building was occupied by Pulcinella delle Carceri and some exiles from Verona, fighting against Mastino I della Scala, who used it as his own refuge. In 1279 it was donated to Niccolò della Scala, son of Mastino I, by the pope Pope Niccolò III, in gratitude to the Scaligeri for their capture, in Sirmione, of a group of Albigensian heretics (Cathars). At the beginning of the 15th century it was occupied by the Republic of Venice, after wresting it from the Carraresi, allied at that time with Guglielmo della Scala, illegitimate son of Cangrande II della Scala, elected by them as lord of Verona in 1404. For his military merits, the Venetians in 1509 granted Illasi as a fief to their valiant leader Count Girolamo Pompei, known as "Malanchino", whose family had boasted rights in those places for centuries. The leader deserved the credit for having captured and translated into Venetian prisons on 8 August of the same year, the Marquis of Mantua Francesco II Gonzaga, who had set out to conquer Legnago. 9월 29, 2021, Santuario del Crocefisso in San Felice
The building is believed to originate from the 9th-10th century. In the wall of the current façade, traces of three cross windows, typical of Romanesque architecture, were seen in the 19th century. The current apse, with a cross vaulted ceiling and monogram of San Bernardino da Siena, is the work of a renovation carried out in the fifteenth century; the ceiling of the church is instead a simple truss. Tradition has it that San Felice (like Campiano) was a stopover for Pope Lucius III on his journey to the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro in Badia Calavena; it seems that the pope had granted a special privilege, that is to be able to gain all the indulgences of the Roman Church for every Friday of the year. The sanctuary (officially the rectory of the diocese of Verona) is open every day and is located on the pass between Val Tramigna and Val d'Illasi, a few meters from the provincial road 37/a "dei ciliegi"; precisely its position makes it frequented by people from both valleys especially during the Fridays of Lent with the Via Crucis. It was built in 1958 by the illustrious professor Alberto Trabucchi for his devotion to San Marco. The style takes up and reinterprets the pure structure of the medieval-Romanesque churches scattered along our valley. The gabled façade is enriched in the upper part by a circular window called "occhio" and is preceded by a portico with three round arches. The internal space evokes in its sobriety the meditative and prayerful spirit typical of these "small" temples. The bell tower has a quadrangular plan and in the belfry there are nine bells, famous for the concerts held every year for the trophy in memory of Professor Trabucchi. Its verticality fits naturally with the severity of the surrounding cypresses. Open during the day with continuous diffusion of classical and sacred music

I'm Ferrazzese and as a child I walked this stretch every day to get to Montorio. Consider that 30 years ago it was not what it is today (i.e. a municipal path) but a road that was used by farmers to get around easily. We must thank them if we can enjoy this magnificent passage today.
