The former abbey church of San Zeno is one of Verona's most important churches. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. While much of the church is Romanesque, Gothic elements are already evident in the ceiling. The campanile and the large rose window of the facade are distinctive features among Verona's city churches. On June 16, 1973, the parish church was granted the honorary title of Basilica minor. The Ossuary of Custoza, in the picturesque town of Sommacampagna, Italy, is a remarkable site that pays tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives during the Italian Wars of Independence. The Scaligero Castle of Villafranca di Verona is a castle of medieval origin. Inside the walls there are seven small towers called "Torresine" and two shielded towers, that is with only 3 edges. The largest or clock tower has stones with an inscription at its base and it is assumed that they came from an arch (or other building) dedicated to the emperor Tiberius. A curious peculiarity of the Scaligero Castle of Villafranca is that the battlements of the actual walls are of Guelph or flat shape, while the battlements of the keep and the shielded towers are of Ghibelline or "dovetail" shape.

Beautiful monument that documents the past!

San Zeno is one of the most beautiful Romanesque religious buildings in northern Italy. The basilica was built between 1118 and 1135 over a destroyed previous building. The eye-catcher on the facade is the portal, a work by the master Nicolao: biblical scenes are depicted on 48 bronze panels.
