The cathedral of San Lorenzo, commonly called the Cathedral of Alba, takes on the role of the main place of worship within the town of Alba, which also enjoys the nickname of "capital of the Langhe". On the occasion of a visit to the Piedmontese hills, recognized as a UNESCO heritage site, I highly recommend you contemplate the magnificence of this building. The streets and this square host important events, and a starred restaurant lends itself to delight your palate, offering an experience steeped in the historical and traditional essence of Piedmont. On the façade of the cathedral you will be able to spot the bas-reliefs of the symbols of the four evangelists that make up the initials of the city (angel, lion, ox, eagle).

Cappella del Barolo – colorful chapel among the vineyards This was once a simple chapel made of brick, now it is an eye-catcher painted with bright colors among the green vines. The colorful chapel is the creation of Sol LeWitt and David Tremlett, who transformed the brick walls into brightly colored works of art at the request of the Ceretto family in 1999. Historical interpretation: The idea actually came about by chance, when the British artist David Tremlett was in the area for an exhibition at Barolo Castle. He met the Ceretto family, who wanted to have the chapel renovated, and thought it was a challenge to transform a chapel into a work of art. He designed the interior of the chapel himself and asked Sol LeWitt, one of the artists with whom he was good friends, to design the exterior. The story goes that they received no money in compensation, but a bottle of Barolo every week, until their death. The chapel was officially inaugurated in 1914 as the Cappella di Santa Maria delle Grazie, but this name now rings a bell among few Piedmontese. Everyone knows the chapel as the Cappella del Barolo, but note: on Google Maps you will find the chapel as the Cappella delle Brunate. Even more chapel art in Piedmont What few people outside Piedmont know is that David Tremlett created another work of art in Piedmont in 2016 – in the village of Coazzolo, between Alba and Asti. Here he painted the walls of the Chiesetta della Beata Maria Vergine del Carmine. Tremlett was a great lover of Italy. He once said: 'Italy is the homeland of painting. I paint walls but am a sculptor. In Rome, I looked at Michelangelo's and Raphael's works in awe. To learn something new, you have to let it surprise you and know how to observe.' 10월 18, 2022, Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista
Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista), to whom this church was dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold of the Old and New Testaments. His parents are Zechariah and Elisabeth. After the proclamation of God's incarnation, the Mother of God visits her relative Elisabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, John the Baptist. This is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner / pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches the repentance of sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan, where Jesus also comes to be baptized, being filled with the Holy Spirit that descends on him from heaven. The commemoration day of San Giovanni Battista in the calendar of saints is on June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.

Alba - sweet daydreams... Thunderstorm welcomes us to Alba. The air is cooled and purified especially for us after a long period of heat. Sinuses are stimulated by the specific sweet smell of chocolate spread. Welcome to the land of Nutella where Emperor Ferrero rules in his golden jacket. Alba is perhaps one of the most famous cities in the Piedmont. That has everything to do with Fiera del Tartufo Bianco. The white truffle fair that put Alba on the map for good. In addition to the white truffle, the city is also known for its hazelnuts. Ferrero's head office is located there. Who hasn't eaten Nutella chocolate spread as a child or still does? Our discovery of the city is already off to a smooth start. On the main shopping street 'Via Vittorio Emanuele', the hand remains on the clasp of the wallet and the credit card remains wrapped in its aluminum foil. After the heavy thunderstorm, the many fine enotecas and perfumeries once again fill the shopping street with their bouquets. Nice clothing stores are putting their clothing racks back on the front line of sales. Summer outfits bring color to the city in their own way. Fresh truffles stare at passers-by from behind secured glass. Shrewd salespeople gesture with their bag of tricks to sell their wares. They don't get much attention because Michele Ferrero gets all our attention in the Piazza Savona. But because of noisy machines that give the piazza a new look, we quickly return to the old city center. The sun breaks a new heat record in no time. In the shadows of an imposing palazzo we finally find the Cathedrale San Domenica. The 15th century house of worship cools the mind. A perfect moment to ask forgiveness in advance for the emerging urge to lust. The mind is strong but the heat has weakened the body and requires cooling in the form of an Aperol Spritz. The desire is stronger than ourselves. Seated on a terrace, staring at the glasses of Aperol, the glass eyes desirable... Ice cubes cool the flesh of the orange slices. The coolness shows itself on the outside. Delicious… until cauliflower clouds gather above our heads. The firmament darkened over Alba. Want to know how we fared?
