Casale Marittimo (like Rosignano Marittimo, the name Marittimo does not indicate its proximity to the sea, but rather its membership in the Maremma subregion) represents the classic hilltop town typical of Tuscany. It is a small village of about a thousand inhabitants, located on a hill about 250 meters above sea level along the "Strada dei Tre Comuni" (https://www.komoot.com/it-it/highlight/7839527) that connects it to Guardistallo and Montescudaio. It can also be reached from Bibbona and Cecina. For those coming from Bibbona, it suddenly appears, with the fortress and historic center overlooking the more recently built town, and olive groves and cypress trees below. Casale, in addition to its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, is certainly worth a half-day visit for its many other remarkable features. From a historical and urban perspective, it is a typical medieval village perched on a hill, with the remains of its walls, narrow, steep streets, winding alleys that wind between the houses, the "Castello" (fortress), the church, and the most important public buildings and noble residences. Their construction materials, stone and brick, give the village a characteristic red-and-gray hue. From a landscape perspective, the Casale fortress offers a wide and spectacular view of the red roofs of the village, the sea and islands, the countryside below, and the surrounding valleys and mountains. From a gastronomic-food perspective, Casale enjoys a good reputation for its typical "zero-kilometer" products and its cuisine (oil, wine, honey, bread, sweets, snails, and game). Finally, its location makes it an excellent starting point for excursions on foot or by bicycle to the neighboring towns (Guardistallo, Bibbona) or more distant and challenging locations (the Macchia della Magona, Montescudaio, Bolgheri, Marina di Cecina or Volterra).
