At the end of 1944/beginning of 1945, during the Second World War, numerous residents of Gravenhorst were killed in four bomb attacks by the British on the Mittelland Canal. Today, the Mittelland Canal is a memorial site.

This commemorates the four bombings in World War II. There are also some information boards and unexploded bombs. With 150 to 250 bombers per attack, 1,400 to 2,100 of these large bombs were dropped - here on the Mittelland Canal. The aim was to destroy the Mittelland Canal, as an important transport route between the Ruhr region and the coast, for submarine construction, among other things.
