"In 91 BC the peoples who rebelled against the Romans united and founded the Italic League with Corfinio as its capital. In this first nucleus of the Italian state a gold coin was minted with the writing Italia. Corfinio fell under the attacks of Rome only in 88 BC The Roman general Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo, after the battle of Corfinium, said: “At te Corfinium circumdata validis muris'”. The remains of the thousand-year-old walls, still today, stand imposingly as evidence of the rebellion that went down in history as the "Italic war".
