At the foot of Monte Velino, in the municipality of Massa d'Albe, the ancient city of Alba Fucens is an archaeological jewel still waiting to be explored. It was founded by the Romans in 303 BC. as a Latin colony, in the territory of the Equi. In the imperial age it was a rich and prosperous place as evidenced by the archaeological remains, including the imposing amphitheater built by the prefect Macrone. The area of the entire excavations is open and can be visited without a ticket.

The refuge is managed by the CAI section of Avezzano, it is not always open and you need to call to reserve beds or other activities (cell +39 345 162 6570). It doesn't have a winter room, so if you arrive and it's closed you have to camp outside. The refuge is located in a wonderful area: right at the entrance to the Majelama valley and at the foot of the imposing Cafornia mountain.

Tagliacozzo is a very suggestive town in the Marsica area. It stands on the slopes of Mount Civita and the houses seem to climb along the rocky side. The central square with the fountain with the obelisk surrounded by colorful houses is particularly characteristic.
