Possidente is a fraction of Avigliano. It is an excellent starting point for trips north of Potenza thanks to the presence of the train station.

The origin of the name could derive from "avis locum" or "locum avellani". The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine, located on the top of Monte Carmine in Avigliano, Basilicata, is a sacred place that dates back to the 12th century.
