According to local legend, the Ascension Day procession originated as a thanksgiving procession during the plague. However, according to the parish chronicle, the origins of the current form of the procession date back to the 18th century, when Mettendorf still belonged to Prüm Abbey. Until 1757, the citizens made an annual pilgrimage to Prüm. This was followed by the French Revolution, during which no procession took place. The custom was reintroduced around 1850. Today, the pilgrimage on this day leads to the field shrine "Maasch Kapellchen."

Hops have been grown here in the Eifel since 1560. The entire harvest from the "Hopfenhof Dick" goes to the BITBURGER BREWERY.

In the 18th century, the Austrian administration promoted the construction of glassworks in the Duchy of Luxembourg. In 1796, the glassworks was founded by Johann Dominik Laeis. Around 50 people were employed here, producing glass balloons, window glass, bottles and fine crystal glasses. There were two production periods from 1774 to 1811/12 and from 1843 to 1850/51. Production was finally stopped around 1850/51. Remains of the large round building with a diameter of 17m in which the glass furnace was located can still be seen. The melting furnace is said to have had a diameter of 5m. The wood for the furnace was brought to the furnaces by carts through a long corridor and the ash was transported out on the opposite side. Other buildings in the complex are the grinding shop with the narrow windows, behind each of which there was a grinding or cutting bench that was powered by a water wheel located in the neighboring mill wheel building. Also preserved are an administration building and the glass master’s house.

Coming from Bettingen, if you turn left after the bridge onto the "Im Buchholz" road, you will pass through a very beautiful forest, which then continues left to the Prüm and past the new Bettingen waterworks to Oberweis.
