The area was significantly expanded and renaturalized through major clearing and mulching work in October 2024. It is a habitat for rare plant species that have been scientifically recorded.

In autumn 2024, the aging black shelter was replaced with a new structure. A panoramic lounger was also installed to better enjoy the view all the way to the Siegquelle spring on the Ederkopf in the Rothaargebirge.

This piece of heathland is located in the border area between North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, which is largely forested here. Nothing outstanding, but at least a nice change for hikers on their way.

A geological peculiarity from the old volcanic times can be seen here: the basalt steles that can be seen at this point have been given the name "The Pillars of the Earth". I don't know whether Ken Follet also knows this place :-)
