Beautiful square with a fountain

Breitenheim

The Evangelical Castle Church is Meisenheim's landmark and one of the most important late Gothic buildings on the left bank of the Rhine. It was built between 1479 and 1504 by Philipp von Gmünd, and, together with the Duke Wolfgang House, forms the only remaining part of the castle. Particularly noteworthy are the star-vaulted ceiling, the Rococo pulpit, the 18th-century Stumm organ, and the gravestones of the former lords of the castle.

The Reporting Square is, alongside the market square, the only larger square in Meisenheim's historic old town. First mentioned in 1653, it was probably where soldiers of the Citizens' Association had to report during the Thirty Years' War. Later, cattle markets were held here. Today, it's a wonderful place for a stroll. The fountain, featuring a boy and two titmice, has stood here since 1938.

Originally a small quarry, this site was dedicated to Meisenheim's Justice Councilor Gustav Merck in 1935. It was previously used partly as an open-air stage and for church services until the 1970s.

The small hut on the "Bürger-Steig" (Citizens' Trail) in Meisenheim was built in 1906 by the then-beautification association. The name refers to the originally very light, almost white birch wood from which it was built; it is said to lie like a swan on the path. Numerous lovers probably met here—their names were carved into the wood inside.

The early 14th-century civic tower once served, in addition to its defensive function, as a debtors' prison on its second floor when a debtor couldn't pay or provide a reliable guarantor. Drunkards, rioters, adulterers, and parents whose children were truant from school also received a short "tower punishment." Until the end of the 17th century, a circular enclosure preceded the tower.
