The upper floors of the building are constructed with ornate oak timber framing. The masonry surfaces of the solid floors are plastered. The corners are accentuated by corner blocks made of red Weser sandstone, as are the window and door frames. The building is a listed building.

The wild garlic (Allium Paradoxum), an invasive plant native to the Caucasus, is now blooming in many places in the Eilenriede (see https://www.hannover.de/Media/01-DATA-Neu/Bilder/Landeshauptstadt-Hannover/Meldungen/2020/April/Neophyten-Wunderlauch-Allium-paradoxum). The plant is edible and can be processed in a similar way to wild garlic. It is a little milder in taste than wild garlic, but has a slightly bitter aftertaste. Be careful not to confuse it with lily of the valley, which is poisonous.

Not far from the Lister Tower is the wheel - one of the last giant historical labyrinths in Germany. There is no danger of getting lost here. The surface of the maze consists of grass and gravel, with a linden tree in the middle. It is assumed that the labyrinth is a place of worship from old Germanic times. Dance and spring games are said to have been held there in order to connect and reconcile with the forces of nature through various rituals.

Archaeological artefacts in the form of around 5000-year-old stone axes from the Stone Age and fragments of burial urns from around 1000 BC provided evidence of settlement around the tax thief. No further sources of human activity on site have been found beyond the time of the Dark Centuries, until the Low German Stürdeif, originally meaning "steure the thief", was first mentioned in 1392 with the construction of a warden's house. The building for a road and wood warden as part of the Landwehr served both the interests of the sovereign, who wanted to delimit the area of the then villages of Groß- and Klein-Buchholz from that of the Hildesheim Bishopric, and of the city of Hanover, which was outside Hanover's city fortifications wanted to exercise control over the use of the forest as well as over the transport of peat for fuel purposes via the ship moat. Around the end of the 17th century, drinks were served for the first time at the Steuerdieb. Source: Wikipedia

The wheel in the Eilenriede is a lawn labyrinth with lawn and gravel surfaces. Through turns, the path leads to the goal in the center - to a large linden tree. It is probably a remnant from old Germanic times: a place of worship where dance and spring games were held. In pre-Christian times people probably tried to reconcile their worldview and way of life with the forces of nature around them by means of ritual dances. On feast days youths and "unpromised" girls ran "for their pleasure" in the windings of the wheel. It is one of the last four historic lawn labyrinths in Germany. The Lister Turm is one of the largest and most beautiful beer gardens in Hanover. Surrounded by old trees, the romantic Art Nouveau facade of the Lister Tower serves as a backdrop. There is also the district center here with many offers.
