For example, the sea eagle family can regularly be observed on the islands in Lake Werbelin. Other well-known animal species such as wolves, otters and beavers have found a home in the former open-cast mine. The diverse lake landscape, criss-crossed by ponds, gravel banks, reed beds, meadows, savannah-like semi-open land and forest, forms a true natural paradise. But above all, the area is a year-round El Dorado for over 180 species of birds and is therefore part of the European bird sanctuary "Agricultural area and post-mining landscape near Delitzsch". The gatherings of thousands of winter guests are spectacular, including various and sometimes very rare species of geese, ducks and songbirds. Due to the outstanding biodiversity, a large part of the former open-cast mining landscape was also designated as the Lake Werbelin nature reserve in 2019. With an area of 1500 hectares, it is one of the 7 largest nature reserves in Saxony. In an otherwise densely populated area, a refuge for nature has been created here, which can develop freely over a large, contiguous area. The Werbeliner See, located on the site of the former town of Werbelin, is an approximately 450 hectare open-cast mining lake that was created by flooding the former Delitzsch-Südwest open-cast mine.
