In 1795/1796, the knight's castle was built in the artificial ruin style as a park setting in the Machern landscape garden by Carl Heinrich August Graf von Lindenau. It dominates the surroundings like a bastion and offers a wonderful view when the weather is clear. The "knight's castle" was intended to be an authentic monument from medieval times due to its appearance. If you like things spooky, you can explore the interior as part of a guided tour of the park. Just a few steps away from the knight's castle is the sandstone pyramid clad in dark red porphyry. Two plaster lions flank the entrance, which is designed as a Doric gable porch. The pyramid was intended to serve as a count's mausoleum, but was never used as such. An ingenious system of hidden openings between the interior and the crypt below, as well as two side corridors, may have served Masonic-Rosicrucian rituals.
