For example, the sea eagle family can regularly be observed on the islands in Lake Werbelin. Other well-known animal species such as wolves, otters and beavers have found a home in the former open-cast mine. The diverse lake landscape, criss-crossed by ponds, gravel banks, reed beds, meadows, savannah-like semi-open land and forest, forms a true natural paradise. But above all, the area is a year-round El Dorado for over 180 species of birds and is therefore part of the European bird sanctuary "Agricultural area and post-mining landscape near Delitzsch". The gatherings of thousands of winter guests are spectacular, including various and sometimes very rare species of geese, ducks and songbirds.

Due to the outstanding biodiversity, a large part of the former open-cast mining landscape was also designated as the Lake Werbelin nature reserve in 2019. With an area of 1500 hectares, it is one of the 7 largest nature reserves in Saxony. In an otherwise densely populated area, a refuge for nature has been created here, which can develop freely over a large, contiguous area. The area thus makes an important contribution to the preservation of biological diversity in Germany. The nature reserve invites you to observe fascinating nature or simply to relax all year round.
