For the construction of the main train station in Leipzig at the beginning of the 20th century, gravel was used that was taken from the ground in Wahren near the former "Hundewasser", a tributary of the White Elster. The remaining pit was filled with water to form the current Auensee. In 1908, the "Bank für Grundbesitz Leipzig" planned an amusement park there, which was opened in 1912 as "Lunapark". At the time, the Luna Park was advertised with the slogan "Germany's largest amusement establishment with half a million square meters". As a result of the global economic crisis in the early 1930s, Luna-Park GmbH had to file for bankruptcy and was auctioned off on January 13, 1932. In 1934, most of the amusement facilities were demolished. Only the restaurant building remained standing and has been called Haus Auensee since 1936.
