Even before his election as supreme shepherd of the Catholic Church, the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires had met several times with Rabbi Abraham Skorka for a joint book project. On the subject of the Holocaust, Jorge Bergoglio (later Pope Francis, who died Easter Monday 2025) said: "The Shoah is a genocide like the others of the 20th century, but with one particularity. I don't want to say that it is paramount in importance and the others secondary, but there is one particularity, an idolatrous construction against the Jewish people. The pure race, the superman, these are idols upon which National Socialism developed (...) And every Jew killed was a slap in the face for the living God in the name of idols." The 32-meter-high Red Tower, a former defense and watchtower, is a remnant of the Pulsnitz city gate and has 117 steps. As the name suggests, this street leads to the town of Pulsnitz, 12 km away. City gates were particularly vulnerable in times of war. Therefore, the defenders attempted to protect them with additional walls and towers. In an emergency, many archers could take up positions on it. The tower also served as a municipal prison for the higher ranks. The city bailiffs imprisoned criminals from the lower classes in the town hall prison. Since August 2011, the monastery church has served not only ecclesiastical purposes but also as a sacred museum. Important sacred works of art from the churches of Kamenz are presented here. The Franciscan monastery, built outside the city, initially had no direct access to the city. For this reason, the monks purchased a house along the city wall, demolished it, and created a passageway, the present-day monastery gate. The 40-meter-high tower is visible from afar and dominates the city's skyline. Yet one thing is clear: the secular building is not intended to overshadow the sacred main church. Amidst the red of the town hall, the golden clock immediately catches the eye. Likewise, the decorative coat of arms of the city of Kamenz, in the form of a relief coat of arms beneath the clock. Directly above the entrance is a counter commemorating the city's 800th anniversary. Starting at 800 on August 22, 2022, it counted backward 800 days to the beginning of the anniversary year on January 1, 2025, and has been counting upwards ever since.
