The “Tower of Freedom” built from light sandstone and visible from afar – a name that disappeared in the 1970s in favor of the simple “bell tower” – ends the path “through dying and fighting to victory” that the memorial aims to show. In the self-image of the builders, the tower, which is over 50 meters high, represents the GDR's claim to be the better Germany.
Inside, under a sealed bronze plate, there is soil and ashes from Nazi concentration camps and terror sites across Europe. Two staircases lead from it to a light-flooded platform. Above it is the Buchenwald bell, which weighs almost 7 tons and is struck every hour.
