Here, Federal Highway 195 crosses the Elde River. The bridge can be raised if necessary (for larger boats to pass through). On the south side of the bridge is the Dömitz harbor, and a little further south, the Elde flows into the Elbe.

The Elbe Valley Dunes near Klein Schmölen are a unique natural phenomenon in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, about 100 kilometers from the sea. They were formed around 12,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age and today form the largest inland shifting dune in Europe – up to 42 meters high and about two kilometers long. On the nutrient-poor, dry sandy areas, you will find rare plants and animals, including endangered insect species and the sand sedge. The dunes are located on the edge of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which, with its near-natural floodplain landscape, offers great opportunities for nature experiences and relaxation.

Dömitz is very beautiful and highly recommended as a starting point for cycling tours. We parked in the motorhome area at the hotel.

On the edge of the Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park, Europe's largest inland dune rises and offers a wonderful view. From the highest point, about 42 meters above sea level, you can see the Löcknitz lowlands in Mecklenburg, the Lenzener Wische in Brandenburg and the Elbe foreland in Lower Saxony.

Is a moving dune They are formed by wind-blown sand in areas with sandy soil and little vegetation. The wind carries the sand and deposits it in other places, which can form dune shapes.

There is a hotel there with 26 double rooms. The restaurant is open daily. Beautiful view of the river and is 1km from the Dömitz fortress. The fortress is recommended, there is parking on site. The hotel complex used to be a granary.

The shifting dune near Klein Schmölen offers a beautiful view over the Mecklenburg Elbe valley, towards Brandenburg, and across the Elbe to Lower Saxony. You can also observe many birds and insects here. I was able to photograph a swallowtail butterfly, for example. A very beautiful area for walking and photography.

At the foot of the Mühlenberg small village center with fire station, children's playground and library. The mill (without the mill wings) is privately owned and can only be viewed from below.
