With a history spanning over 160 years, Wittenberge was once one of the largest depots of the German Reichsbahn (German State Railway). The Berlin–Hamburg railway line opened in 1846, establishing Wittenberge as an important railway hub. The first depot was built in Wittenberge in 1872. The depot was expanded in the 1930s and became one of the largest in the region. Deutsche Bahn closed the depot in 1997. In 2012, the site was taken over by the Wittenberge Railway Depot Foundation for museum use. This involved the restoration and conversion of the locomotive shed into a railway museum. The museum's exhibition includes over forty historic rail vehicles, including seven steam locomotives, one electric locomotive, four mainline diesel locomotives, ten shunting diesel locomotives, and other exhibits such as small cars, freight cars, and service cars.
