This bronze sculpture of a historic town crier stands in front of the Tourist Information Center on Alte Schulstraße. It commemorates the custom, common until the mid-20th century, of having news and announcements announced after church services. The sculpture was unveiled at a ceremony in 1994. The Low German term "Afrouper" means "caller." Until August 1965, the Afroupeplatz (calling place), located on Alte Schulstraße in front of the current Tourist Information Center, was used to announce new news to the citizens by the community messenger, the so-called Afrouper. The square was therefore of great importance to the citizens. Until the end of the First World War, it was the police officers' job to make announcements. Therefore, only those who could read and, ideally, write were considered for police service. For the local administration, the mayor's office, the Afrouper was the simplest, but also the most important, way to inform the citizens about official matters. Announcements around 1800 included, for example, references to banned writings, the date of the roll call for those going to Holland, billeting, and information for those wishing to emigrate.
