A great open-air theater in the castle ruins

Built as a checkpoint for a trade route around the year 1100, the castle brought in tolls and profit. Noble courts settled all around. Despite the fact that the complex was under a ban in 1226, its popularity did not diminish and it ended up being pledged to the Bishop of Osnabrück. After numerous feuds, Count Konrad von Tecklenburg-Schwerin had the castle expanded like a fortress in the 16th century. It was later converted into a residential palace by his daughter Anna, but sold to King Frederick of Prussia in 1707. Due to a lack of care and maintenance, the magnificent castle fell into disrepair, but when it was released as a quarry in 1744 it became one of the most beautiful ruins in the Münsterland.
