The Low German term "Afrouper" means "announcer." At the Afroupeplatz (announcement square), located on Alte Schulstraße in front of the current tourist information office, news was announced to the citizens by the town messenger, the so-called Afrouper, until August 1965. The square was therefore of great importance to the citizens. Until the end of the First World War, it was the duty of the police constables to make the announcements. Only those who could read and, ideally, also write, were eligible to become police constables. For the town administration, the mayor's office, the Afroupe was the simplest, but also the most important, way of informing the citizens about official matters. Announcements around 1800 included, for example, notices of prohibited writings, the date of the roll call for seasonal workers in the Netherlands, billeting of troops, and information for those wishing to emigrate.
