The Heilenbecke dam was built between 1894 and 1896, making it the oldest dam in South Westphalia. It served as a water reservoir for the hammer works and grinding cottages along the Heilenbecke. Today it is mainly used for drinking water production. A 2.4 km circular hiking trail runs around the picturesque dam.

The Heilenbecke dam was originally a water reservoir for the hammer mills and grinding huts that were located along the Heilenbecke. Nowadays, however, it primarily serves to supply drinking water; in addition to raising the Ruhr at low water.
