A Prignitz legend tells that a mighty giant lived in Lenzen a long time ago. To test his strength, he threw large boulders into the Rambower See. When he died, his companions put these stones together into a burial chamber and buried the giant in it. Even today, these boulders rise calmly and proudly from the ground of the Mellener Höhnengrave.

First monumental stone building of the Prignitz; Interesting burial site from the Stone Age, next to it a "monumental" rest and barbecue area from modern times

When Friedrich the Pious decided to relocate his residence from Schwerin to his father's remote hunting lodge "Ludwigs-Lust", he first had the canal system built (1756-1760): 28 km long from the Stör to the Rögnitz, at 14 m Gradient. The masterpiece of the cascades was created directly in front of the former hunting lodge. From there the canal with fountains ("water jumps") and waterfalls goes through the forest and uses the former paternal hunting path that led to the hunting star of the "14 avenues" as a route. Since then, the canal system has shaped the unique character of the castle park. The stone bridge was built in 1780 by court architect J.J.Busch in place of an older wooden bridge. In 1980 a falling beech tree destroyed the bridge and jewelry vase; However, through persistent citizen engagement, both could be restored. The ramparts on both sides of the canal up to the fountain called "Mönch" were renewed in 2014 with lawn benches, staircases and rows of trees, as has been handed down on old engravings. https://www.stadtludwigslust.de/kultur-und-tourismus/sehenswertes-00001-00001/schlosspark/

The spaciously designed palace square is dominated by the basin's cascades, created between 1780 and 1785 by the Bohemian sculptor Rudolf Kaplunger. These sandstone cascades replaced the original wooden cascade. The figurative decorations represent the river gods of the Rögnitz and the Stör. The Ludwigslust Canal was built between 1756 and 1760 as a 26 km long connecting axis, connecting these two rivers and enabling the Baroque water features. In 2008, the cascade underwent its first comprehensive renovation, and now not only the cascade but also the figures literally shine in new splendor. The water features are not only worth seeing in summer; on cold winter days, the watercourses become icy works of art. The Palace Square is also adorned with several beautiful half-timbered buildings, the monument to Frederick Francis I, and the "Old Guardhouse," built as a guardhouse and detention center. From here, you can enjoy one of the city's most beautiful views: from the palace to the Cascades and further to the City Church. Situated in a straight line between the palace and the City Church is the newly designed memorial to the victims of the Wöbbelin concentration camp, with the cube designed by Herbert Bartholomäus as the central object of the memorial. https://www.ludwigslust.de/kultur-und-tourismus/sehenswertes-00001-00001/schlossplatz-und-kaskaden/
