The baroque palace was built from 1772 to 1776 after the model of Versailles, after Ludwigslust had been designated as the seat of government of the Mecklenburg dukes in 1756. The 150 hectare castle park is one of the most beautiful facilities in Germany.

The spaciously designed palace square is dominated by the basin's cascades, created between 1780 and 1785 by the Bohemian sculptor Rudolf Kaplunger.
These sandstone cascades replaced the original wooden cascade.
The figurative decorations represent the river gods of the Rögnitz and the Stör.
The Ludwigslust Canal was built between 1756 and 1760 as a 26 km long connecting axis, connecting these two rivers and enabling the Baroque water features.
In 2008, the cascade underwent its first comprehensive renovation, and now not only the cascade but also the figures literally shine in new splendor.
