Beautifully designed trail of legends with all sorts of stories 😉 that are said to have happened. Numerous sculptures and a wonderful path under the oak trees towards the hunting lodge. The path is a bit bumpy, but still easy to cycle. During the week, the whole area is yours. Meaning, no other people around.

The 24 "water jumps" in the Ludwigslust Canal in the Ludwigslust Palace Park are really worth seeing and it is worth walking the path through the beautiful palace park to get here. The water jumps are powered exclusively by the water gradient. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Ludwigslust_Schlosspark_24_Wasserspr%C3%BCnge.JPG

If you don't scroll the map up, it looks like there's a bridge here. At least, that's what I thought when I arrived here from the north and wanted to continue on Banzkower Damm. Unfortunately, there isn't a bridge here, so I found myself standing in front of the canal and couldn't go any further... I then cycled south between the fishponds to cross the canal. In retrospect, the better option would have been to take the Gaartzer Bridge heading north. It does have steps, but that's definitely the better route. I'll be wiser for next time. 😉 Here's a link to the Gaartzer Bridge: https://www.komoot.de/plan/@53.4966970,11.5613310,13.000z?sport=touringbicycle&waypoint=hl:312508

The legendary world of the Lewitz is teeming with dragons, mythical creatures, and all sorts of secrets from the history of Germany's largest meadow landscape. Along the trail, there are a total of 16 stations, each dedicated to a specific legend. Artists have created statues for each station, and the legend can be read on panels or accessed as an audio play via QR code. There are discovery activities for children, and information about the forest and nature is conveyed in a playful way. The starting and finishing point is the Friedrichsmoor hunting lodge, and the trail is suitable for hikers and cyclists. An enchanted meadow and forest landscape like the Lewitz naturally inspires fairy tales and legends. There are stories of white women roaming across foggy fields, of the Wild Hunt roaring along country paths at night, and of magnificent white stags emerging from the thickets of mighty oaks and beeches. Legends usually have a kernel of truth and lead back to the time when the Lewitz was settled by Slavs or to the time of the Napoleonic Wars. On the "Legendary Lewitz" forest adventure trail (12 km cycle path or 4 km hiking trail), visitors can learn about the landscape's mythical world. At 16 stations, experience and discovery stations allow visitors to get to the bottom of the myths. Furthermore, knowledge about nature is imparted in a playful way. https://www.auf-nach-mv.de/reiseziele/a-walderlebnispfad-friedrichsmoor

When Friedrich the Pious decided to relocate his residence from Schwerin to his father's remote hunting lodge "Ludwigs-Lust", he first had the canal system built (1756-1760): 28 km long from the Stör to the Rögnitz, at 14 m Gradient. The masterpiece of the cascades was created directly in front of the former hunting lodge. From there the canal with fountains ("water jumps") and waterfalls goes through the forest and uses the former paternal hunting path that led to the hunting star of the "14 avenues" as a route. Since then, the canal system has shaped the unique character of the castle park. The stone bridge was built in 1780 by court architect J.J.Busch in place of an older wooden bridge. In 1980 a falling beech tree destroyed the bridge and jewelry vase; However, through persistent citizen engagement, both could be restored. The ramparts on both sides of the canal up to the fountain called "Mönch" were renewed in 2014 with lawn benches, staircases and rows of trees, as has been handed down on old engravings. https://www.stadtludwigslust.de/kultur-und-tourismus/sehenswertes-00001-00001/schlosspark/

The spaciously designed palace square is dominated by the basin's cascades, created between 1780 and 1785 by the Bohemian sculptor Rudolf Kaplunger. These sandstone cascades replaced the original wooden cascade. The figurative decorations represent the river gods of the Rögnitz and the Stör. The Ludwigslust Canal was built between 1756 and 1760 as a 26 km long connecting axis, connecting these two rivers and enabling the Baroque water features. In 2008, the cascade underwent its first comprehensive renovation, and now not only the cascade but also the figures literally shine in new splendor. The water features are not only worth seeing in summer; on cold winter days, the watercourses become icy works of art. The Palace Square is also adorned with several beautiful half-timbered buildings, the monument to Frederick Francis I, and the "Old Guardhouse," built as a guardhouse and detention center. From here, you can enjoy one of the city's most beautiful views: from the palace to the Cascades and further to the City Church. Situated in a straight line between the palace and the City Church is the newly designed memorial to the victims of the Wöbbelin concentration camp, with the cube designed by Herbert Bartholomäus as the central object of the memorial. https://www.ludwigslust.de/kultur-und-tourismus/sehenswertes-00001-00001/schlossplatz-und-kaskaden/
