The "Am Stettiner Haff" nature park is located in northeastern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, directly on the border with Poland. Here you will find the vast, contiguous forests of the Ueckermünde Heath, the natural and undeveloped sections of the lagoon coast, lagoon meadows, the lowlands of the Uecker and Randow, and the Brohmer Hills. The landscape is characterized by small lakes, magnificent beech and mixed forests, and a wide variety of animals. The current landscape was formed approximately 12,000 to 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. At that time, glaciers and meltwater formed the flat ground moraines, valleys, basins, and striking terminal moraines such as the Rosenthaler Randlage and the Brohmer Hills. Wind-blown sand blankets and inland dunes were deposited, which today make up the sandy area of the Ueckermünde Heath. You can discover a diverse landscape in the nature park: from wet moors and meadows to dry grasslands, extensive forests, and inland dunes. This diversity ensures that you'll find a particularly rich flora and fauna here—from rare birds to otters and many unique plant species.

Very beautiful, well-kept garden/park. Worth seeing. The cake selection in the adjoining bistro is also highly recommended

One might ask how dunes are formed so far inland... The answer would be: during the last ice age, during centuries of thawing, these fine sands were transported into the lagoon by meltwater rivers and then piled up by the wind.

Inland dunes Size: 1460 ha Nature reserve since 1990 The nature reserve is registered as an FFH (flora, fauna, habitat) area and is part of the European bird sanctuary "Riether Werder, Gottesheide, Ahlbecker Seegrund". After the ice melted at the end of the Weichselian glaciation around 10,000 years ago, an inland dune massif was formed in the area of the former Haff reservoir immediately south of Altwarp, which is made up of irregularly arranged dune ridges. Inland dunes of this kind can only be found again in southwest Mecklenburg, particularly in the town of Klein-Schmölen near Dömitz.

The Altwarper Binnendünen, Neuwarper See and Riether Werder nature reserve is characterized by the last ice age and the centuries-long thawing period that followed. From the dunes you have beautiful views all the way to Nowe Warpno on the Polish side. Numerous juniper trees and bushes grow here. A pristine valley with a special flair.

The inner thin is just there and funny little animals live there. And the thin is a lot of sandy soil or mill sand.

from the website Welcome ... in the "Green Paradise" by Walter Kapron and Manfred Genseburg. We, Walter Kapron and Manfred Genseburg, have been cultivating our garden, which is so unique for this region, since 1982. We have fulfilled our dream of our own "green paradise" on around 30,000 square meters. In 1982 we acquired a farmstead with an old orchard and a natural pond. We wanted to create something special in our region, and over the years we have given the garden the character of a park. We have acquired the necessary knowledge through self-study and through exchanges with like-minded people. Because many of the rare plants only grow and thrive with expert care. With these plants, the interest of friends and acquaintances to look at the garden grew. For us two Christiansbergers, this resulted in the decision to make our own garden accessible to the public all year round. Thanks to this benevolent decision, this private garden has established itself as a popular and unusual destination in the Uecker-Randow region (Vorpommern-Greifswald district).

Although the Baltic Sea is still a few hundred meters away, you get a beach feeling when you enter the area. Because here, south of Altwarp in the area of the former Haff reservoir, an inland dune massif was formed, which consists of irregularly arranged dune ridges. These dunes were created thanks to westerly and northwesterly winds after the last ice age.

Quelle: https://www.biologie-seite.de/Biologie/Ahlbecker_Seegrund

As part of the North German Plain, the Ueckermünde Heath region is predominantly characterized by poor sandy soils, while lowland moors can be found in the Uecker, Randow, and Zarow river basins, as well as on the lagoon coast. This paradise of charming nature, with small lakes, magnificent beech and mixed forests, and its wildlife, is a protected landscape area due to its diversity and beauty. The nature park region was shaped by the Pomeranian stage of the Weichselian glaciation approximately 12,000 to 10,000 years ago. The resulting surface structures are predominantly ground moraines with low relief, characterized by ice margins, outwash plains, valleys, and basins. During the Late Glacial Period, meltwater accumulated as a result of the ice massif melting only slowly in the north, forming the enormous lagoon reservoir. Wind-blown sand blankets and inland dunes were deposited. This combination characterizes the sandy area of the Ueckermünde Heath today. Not far from Altwarps there is a remarkable, juniper-grown area, the juniper grove. Although the common juniper is common in the local area, it occurs in large quantities and very beautiful forms in the juniper grove. At the same time, with a stand of pine trees over 120 years old, it creates a strange contrast that can definitely be described as unspoilt. Source: http://altwarp.net/wacholdertal

The nature reserve Altwarper Binnendünen, Neuwarper See and Riether Werder has a size of 1,460 hectares. It was shaped by the last glaciation and the subsequent centuries-long defrosting period. The dunes open up beautiful views up to the Polish side to Neuwarp (Nowe Warpno). The dune areas at Altwarp cover silver grass, sheep fescue, blue-green schiller grass, mountain hairline and Carthusian carnation. The endangered kerb ant Formica foreli lives on the dunes.
