Goldbergsee, a 145-hectare reservoir, was originally created as a flood control basin. Today, it is one of the most popular recreational areas in Coburg. The lake was created at the end of 2010. Since then, it has become a popular destination for day trips. The idyllic surroundings offer beautiful views of the majestic Callenberg Castle, which overlooks the lake, and the Glender Wiesen bird sanctuary.

From the platform, you can observe a wide variety of birds and identify them using the information panels. However, the identification panels are quite faded and should be replaced.

On the path leading up to Heldburg Fortress in Thuringia, you'll eventually come across a linden tree split in two. A sign is attached to the hollow of this tree, and I'd like to tell you about it now: "Castle Linden of Heldburg Fortress – Large-leaved Summer Linden. Wanderer, pause! Read my story here: In 1791, I was planted by the then Ducal Court Secretary, Johann Daniel Bechmann (1768-1826), from Heldburg. That's why I was also called the Bechmann Linden. Around 1960, lightning destroyed my beautiful crown and split the trunk. Duke George II of Saxe-Meiningen (1826-1914) and his wife, Baroness von Heldburg (1839-1923), often lingered in the shade of its spreading branches when they resided here at the fortress during the summer months." Located just a few meters from the road to Hohenstein Castle and is worth a visit.

Two staircases carved into the stone lead up to the Devil's Stone in the north of Hohenstein Castle's rock garden. They are still well preserved, as are the abutments of the wooden bridge that once connected the stairs. A wooden hut once stood here. The wooden structures have long since disappeared, but the stone remains of that era have survived to this day.

The path around the Goldbergsee can be enjoyed at any time of year. Many water birds can be observed, part of the path leads through the forest, the rest along the lake. If you prefer peace and quiet, you should come during the week, as it can get crowded at the weekend.

The nature and bird sanctuary at Goldbergsee can be viewed beautifully from the viewing platform. Great view of the lake.

It also has supra-regional importance for the nationwide and cross-border biotope network. The newly created water areas of the Goldbergsee complement the diversity of habitats.
