The Belchenhaus was built in 1898 as a shelter below the Belchen summit. It is located at 1,360 meters and is therefore the highest inn and restaurant in Baden-Württemberg. The local mountain of the Markgräflerland is the 1164 m high Hochblauen, which, thanks to a radio tower on its summit, can be easily seen from the Rhine plain or from other mountains in the southern Black Forest. The mountain rises above Badenweiler and lies between the Upper Rhine and Kandertal valleys. On nice days you have a great view over the southern Black Forest, as far as the Vosges and the border triangle around Basel - if you are lucky you can even see the Bernese Oberland with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. From the Rhine Valley there is at least an impressive 800 meters of altitude to be covered, which is almost alpine proportions. This makes the blue one in the southern Black Forest one of the so-called big four - the other three are Feldberg, Belchen and Schauinsland. Even if the blue in this quartet is certainly the least known, the view that one has, especially from a small tower on the summit, does not need to be hidden from that of the Belchen. If you want to pack the mountain in a short but crisp round trip, you can combine it with the Way of the Cross, for example.
