Really beautiful gardens.

The Uedem High Forest is worth a visit, especially on warm days, as you can always hike in the shade. I was particularly taken with the natural forest cell. A narrow path where you repeatedly had to climb over fallen trees – wildly romantic.

Beautifully landscaped and well-maintained gardens

Some of the old gardens date back to the 17th century. The Brandenburg governor in the Duchy of Cleves, Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen, had set himself the goal of transforming his residential city and its surroundings into an unprecedented park landscape. With the Cleves Gardens, he created a monument that served as inspiration from Berlin to Versailles. Jakob von Campen was entrusted with the execution of the work and laid out the Sternberg, in 1660 the amphitheater with its semicircular gallery and the canal with its two square islands. In the middle of the 18th century a healing spring was discovered and in 1752 a "Lust Büschgen" was planned for spa guests. A spa park with a concert hall was created. From 1782 to 1793 the Cleves Chamber President Julius Ernst von Buggenhagen and building inspector Franke had the so-called "New Plantation" laid out. This was a tree nursery in the area of today's Blumenhof. The planting of 150 exotic trees corresponded to the passion for botanical collecting at the time. The park consisted of water basins, winding paths, resting places and a labyrinth (Doolhof) and was therefore part of the transitional style between baroque and landscape gardens. During the Napoleonic Wars (May 1803 to Nov. 1815) parts of the gardens were destroyed. In 1821, the garden architect Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe planned the redesign and gave the formerly baroque garden (= characterized by symmetry) the character of an English landscape garden. He spoke of the "forest botanical garden" and from this the current name "forest garden" arose. In 1872, in the heyday of "Bad Cleve", the spa house with hotel and promenade hall (today: Museum Kurhaus Kleve) was built. After years of neglect, the historic Weyhe Park was restored in 1975 according to designs by the garden architects Gustav and Rose Wörner. The former tree nursery (now Blumenhof) was adapted to Weyhe's style. 🏆In 1993, the complex was awarded European garden monument status. 🥈In 2007, the Klever Gardens took second place in the "Germany's most beautiful park" competition.
