This is a demanding trail that we tackled on a mountain bike. It begins on rideable gravel but gradually narrows into a true hiking path, where progress becomes slower and more deliberate. The climb to the pass is long and challenging, requiring steady effort and patience as the terrain grows rougher. At the top sits Stettiner Hütte, perched in a breathtaking high-alpine setting that feels almost improbable. Standing there, it’s hard not to wonder how these refuges were ever built in such exposed, remote locations. It’s a powerful reminder of both human resilience and the scale of the mountains surrounding you.

The path on the Leiteralm is very steep, but is rewarded with amazing views as soon as you come out of the forest.

There are quite a few meters of elevation gain to be made, but it's also suitable for those who aren't via ferrata pros. We were one of the first groups in the gap on July 18, 2024, as there is still a lot of old snow this season and the hut owner had previously advised against it. Conclusion: it works well, the chain is free of snow, crampons are helpful. The newly built steps make the north descent much more pleasant.

Here you have reached the highest point of the hike. Great view.
