The largest ammunition depot in Western Europe was located in the Brachter Forest. The British used the area from 1948 to 1996. In the following year, the 12 1/2 square kilometer area was declared a nature reserve and opened up in 2000 with a 32 km long hiking and cycling trail network. What remains are the numerous anti-splinter walls and some storage buildings.
