On the Noorderheide heathland near Vierhouten, three landmarks made of boulders can be found: the Daniel George Pyramid (D.G. Pyramid), the Miesje Pyramid, and the Peter Paul Pyramid (P.P. Pyramid). Along with the now-lost Victoria Pyramid, they were part of the estate of Daniel George van Beuningen (owned by the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum). In 1935, he constructed ingenious waterworks here, consisting of brick gutters, ponds, and a pumping station to pump water and supply the streams. The three remaining pyramids have been restored by volunteers.

The Pluizenmeer is a characteristic fen (small lake) nestled in the Renderklippen: a heathland and woodland formed by ice-age moraines. Originally called "Vlasmeertje" (Little Flax Lake), it was quickly nicknamed "Pluizenmeertje" (Little Fluffy Peat Grass) because it is fringed with fluffy bog grass (cotton cotton).

The castle has changed its appearance in many ways over the centuries. The current building dates from 1905 and was built by Herman Theodore s'Jacob, the scion of a noble family. His father Frederik Bernhard was mayor of Rotterdam and his grandfather was governor of the Dutch East Indies. The architecture goes back to older styles, but the interior still contains features of the Art Nouveau style that was popular at the time. The rest of the estate is still largely intact and the castle garden has also been restored with honor.

Before 1830, the Beekhuizerzand was part of a large quicksand area. Between 1880 and 1930, it was planted with pine trees on a large scale, especially to prevent dusting. It was also used as a military training area and opened for recreation from 1963. In 2004, many fly pines were felled and the top layer removed from the ground, so that it has become a real quicksand area where the destructible sand has been released again. The area is grazed by sheep.

Staverden Castle has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The current castle, partly built in 1853 and partly in 1905, is surrounded by a beautiful estate. The brasserie and brewery located on the estate are also nice. Good place to take a break!

One of the beautiful quicksand areas in the region - although not really natural, but it's worth it as you don't find something like that often.

According to folk tales, there used to be a monastery here, where dark practices took place... The abbot and the monks who lived in the beautiful monastery did not take the pious life very seriously. They drank gallons of wine, gorged themselves during meals and organized meetings with witches and ghosts. Together they danced until it became light again. This went on for a long time. The monks partied, drank and enjoyed life. Until, sometime in the Middle Ages, a stormy Christmas evening put an end to the wicked excesses in the forest. Suddenly, local residents heard a huge lightning strike. The next morning a little boy passed by the site and discovered that the entire monastery had disappeared into a large hole in the forest. All that could be seen were some uprooted trees around the site, the brick path that was the access road and a deep hole.

The legend of the Solse Gat The Solse Gat is a mysterious place in the middle of the Veluwe. In the old forests near Drie there is a large hole in the middle of the forest, the Solse Gat. Geologically speaking, the Solse Gat is a relic from the Ice Age. The name probably came about because the Germans used it as a place of worship for their sun god Sol. The most exciting story is the legend of the sunken monastery: According to legend, where this hole is today there was a large monastery with many towers. This was an ugly, dark place; the chief and all the monks had sold their souls to the devil. In the middle of the night a black mass was held with all the witches and ghosts from the area. The villagers heard the most terrible noises. This lasted until a stormy Christmas night centuries ago. The monastery disappeared into the ground with a huge clap of thunder. All that remained was a gruesome pit. Since then, if you listen carefully, you can hear the monastery bells ringing hoarsely around midnight. Some even see a blue glow rising from the hole. Fortunately, when the sun rises, it seems as if nothing has happened. The dancing trees together with the Solse Gat form a beautiful picture. You can sit on the benches at the Solse Gat and ponder all the exciting stories. Sources:ermelobuitenleven.nl/verhalen/de-legende-van-het-solse-gat beleven.org/verhaal/de_legende_van_het_solse_gat

The legend of the Solse Gat: There once stood a mighty monastery with many towers. It was surrounded by a moat and a wide, stately avenue led to the gate. But it was an angry monastery; the ruler and all the monks had sold their souls to the devil. They lived a life of excess and luxury. In the middle of the night the black mass was read in which all the witches and ghosts from the area participated. People drank wine from buckets and lavish meals were served all night long. The devil made sure that the supply never ran out and he mixed the wine himself. There was dancing, singing and cursing until the early morning. Many had heard strange and terrifying noises within the monastery at night, and everyone knew that the windows of all the halls were brightly lit all night long. That lasted until a stormy Christmas night, centuries ago now. The villagers stayed in their houses in fear during that storm and suddenly heard one loud clap of thunder in the middle of the night. The next morning a little boy came running into the village and said that the monastery in the forest had completely disappeared and that a chillingly deep pit had been created in that place. The trees around it lay uprooted on the ground. All residents wanted to see the miracle. One found another cobbled street and the wide, stately avenue; that was all that remained of the monastery. The earth had opened and closed again. Since then, a strange sound has come from the depths of the Solse hole at midnight. The bells of the sunken monastery begin to ring irregularly and hoarsely, as if they were all cracked; soft at first, but increasingly louder and more anxious. Then from the darkness of the wide avenue come the spirits of the monks. While complaining, they walk in a long gloomy row: slowly and hunched, they walk around the hole, from which a blue glow rises. Then they all float restlessly apart, to slowly emerge from the shadow of the avenue in a long line. This continues until daylight, when they suddenly flee, wailing, into the deepest darkness of the gloomy pit. As soon as the sun shines, it is as if nothing has happened. Everything is quiet and one would almost doubt that just before the shadows disappeared into the water in the middle of the pit of the Solse gat.
