The Zwarte Schaar is a beautiful meander of the IJssel. In 1954, this 6 kilometer long bend was partly cut off from the IJssel. The result is a nature reserve full of small islands, some small beaches, many birds and recreationists on boats.

Huis Bergh owns around 500 hectares of land, including 250 hectares of forest. “De Motte Montferland” is located in the Bergherbos. A moth is a natural mound raised by human hands. “De Motte Montferland” is the largest moth in the Netherlands. It was raised around the year 1000. At least the last 7 meters of the 17 meter high motte were artificially raised. The motte is surrounded by a ditch and a double earthen wall. The fact that the eldest lord of Bergh called himself De Monte (Van den Bergh) indicates that his ancestral home was on a mountain or hill. It is therefore assumed that the oldest generations of Van den Bergh were not in today's Huis Bergh, but in Montferland, a motte lying on the road from Zeddam to Beek in the Bergherbos. The Montferland Motte, which was designated a “protected archaeological monument” in 1999, has been the subject of archaeological research on several occasions. Based on the material found, it was concluded that the moth had a short period of flowering and was abandoned again in the second half of the 11th century. In the 12th century there would have been only a meager settlement. At the edge of the hill there is a small rampart on which a wooden palisade probably stood. There is a dry moat at the foot of the hill. The earth from the ditch was probably used to build a wall outside. A horseshoe-shaped bailey was found northwest of the hill, also surrounded by a dry moat. What was remarkable was the discovery of the foundation of an L-shaped tuff building, which could only be partially excavated as the rest is located under today's hotel. Traces of fire were found in the foundation, indicating one or more destructions. It is not clear whether this L-shaped building served the function of a keep. Remains of a hut bowl (a sunken work or storage shed) and an exceptionally large wooden building were also found on the motte. Finally, the foundations of a late medieval building were also found here, probably the remains of a building mentioned in the archives in 1527. Remains of 5.5 meter thick walls of a tuff tower that may never have been completed were found on the plateau.

A really beautiful section of the IJssel. The small islands, a few small beaches and many animals and boats are in the water there. You can even see cows climbing into the cool water to cool off.

In the last century this was a forest path where it was busy at dusk. Much busier than on paths in other forest areas of Vorden. Loving couples from the village of Vorden liked to go for a walk there. It was romantic. Especially in the spring when the twigs of the trees unfolded further. But also in the summer because then it was so beautiful green. In the fall it was beautiful because of all those golden yellow red colors. They tied a knot together in the low-hanging young beech twigs to seal each other's love in a very natural way. This practice probably started before 1940. In any case, magazines wrote about it in the 1950s. The knots in the branches have been the symbol of the love of many people from Vorden and the surrounding area for many generations. Love forges a bond that grows closer over the years. According to tradition, a union lasts longer if the couple first goes to the lane of knots to put a loop in a young springy beech twig. So the young people went to do that, without giving much publicity to it. Some knots became stiff and stiff over time, as might the couple who tied the knot.

Here the cycle path leads along the backwater of the IJssel with sometimes beautiful views of the wetland with often many birds.

The Knauheide nature reserve is located northwest of Emmerich and was placed under protection in 1977 in order to preserve the area's special floristic and hydrological conditions. Today it has a size of 30.5 hectares. The center of the Knauheide forms a wet, small-scale structured core zone with nutrient-sensitive and extremely species-rich biotope types. It is home to a large number of plants from the base-rich flat moors and acidic heather communities. Outstanding species are overlooked orchid (Dactylorhiza praetermissa), sedge (Carex hostiana), bulky bulrush (Juncus squarrosus) and water feather (Hottonia palustris). The surrounding area is formed by meadows and pastures, which, due to the relief of the ground, are present in different degrees of moisture and characteristics. Old rows of trees and single trees structure the grassland. In the north there is a contiguous forest area made up of birch-oak and alder-broken forest stands with a small proportion of coniferous wood. The core zone of the Knauheide with its impressive biodiversity has been bought by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and placed under protection. The open land biotopes have developed under historical land use (remnants of heather, poor grass, marshy grass meadows rich in small sedge). They are dependent on nutrient-poor, wet site conditions. Regular maintenance measures are necessary in order to imitate the former use and to prevent succession (reforestation). That is why the Nature Conservation Center in the district of Kleve e.V. carries out regular maintenance cuts in cooperation with the Niederrhein Forestry Office. Right in front of Huize Zelle you can see a visual axis and a seven-way junction. This seven-way junction is the center of a unique avenue system, which was constructed at the end of the 18th century in the style of the French landscape architect Le Notre. The avenue in front of the house is exactly as wide from end to end as the house itself. This historic heart of the estate was designated as a 'complex historic country estate' in 2005 and has since enjoyed the status of a national monument. With an area of approximately 94 hectares, the country estate covers approximately a quarter of the estate. (https://www.landgoedzelle.nl/het-landgoed/historie)

The name Zelle could be derived from the Old Germanic "sala" (related to the Dutch hall), which refers to a building, house, hall building, settlement or shelter. The toponym -sel or selle also occurs in the nearby towns of Zelhem and Varssel. The “Goet te Zelle” is already mentioned in 1326 as a Gelders fief. Its owner was Pilgrim van Selle. In the following centuries there are different owners and the estate is split into a Groot Zelle and a Klein Zelle. In 1669 Engelbert Tilman Grothe acquires Groot Zelle, and two years later also Klein Zelle. The Grothe family develops Zelle into a cohesive estate. The estate came into the possession of the Van Dorth tot Medler family in 1838. Jacob Engelbert Tilman Grothe had the current main building built in 1792. The outbuildings from 1787 and 1790 indicate that there was already a country house before that time. After the purchase by the Van Dorth tot Medler family, the house was radically changed around 1840. At the front, an additional floor will be added and it will have the still existing facade. The double gable roof is replaced by the current roof construction in the mid-19th century. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landgoed_Zelle
