7월 23, 2025, Salines de Villeneuve Nature Reserve
🌅 It's true that Les Salines de Villeneuve, near Montpellier, is a little natural gem. Between the pink hues of its salty waters and the flights of pink flamingos, it's a spectacle that borders on magical!

An iconic passageway that plunges directly into the heart of the marsh. The wooden walkway winds over the wetlands, offering a complete immersion in this peaceful environment. It's the perfect place to discreetly observe birds without disturbing their habitat 🦆. The wood is well-maintained and non-slip, perfect even after a downpour.

Source de l'Avy where the river appears from underground under a large rock roof. Nice technical ground around to practice your bike skills (rocky slopes with small drops, steep uphill, etc. You can easily do practice loops of varying difficulty here.

After 3 hours of walking from Juvignac and through the sunny scrubland, the descent to Grabels is rewarded by this pretty and refreshing meeting point with the Mosson: the source of the Avy. You can also get there by starting from the Thermes spring in Juvignac and meandering with the Mosson for almost 5 km. Beautiful course;

If there are in fact two sources in Grabels, the source of the Avy located on the left bank of the Mosson is the main one and offers a pleasant stroll.

Remarkable geological formation, easy to see from the DFCI path. The place is easily accessible thanks to well rolling paths.

Beautiful park where the Montpelliérains like to go with a book to read in the shade of the exotic trees.

Superb hike, nice view. There are a lot of butterflies everywhere in the heights, as well as rabbits. It goes up and it goes down. Surprised to find such a hike so close to my home. To do again 🤟🏻

I went there yesterday. It's a great place, especially during a well-watered spring that gives plenty of water in the Avy and Mosson.

The source of the Avy, along the Mosson. Extremely cool water even cold in a shady and wooded setting. http://www.ville-grabels.fr/1660-les-sites-naturels.htm

In every season a wonderful way through the vastness of the former salt pans with their countless canals and lakes, which are an ideal breeding and feeding area for waterfowl (flamingos, gray and egrets, avocets, plovers, terns, swans and ducks). Already in the 12th century salt was obtained at this point. In the 15th century, the citizens of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone received the privilege of the salt trade from the king. Over time, the salt mines reached an extent of up to 180 hectares. In the 20th century, the salt workers were gradually replaced by machines until 1969, the salt extraction was stopped at Villeneuve. Today, the former salt pans are protected as a nature reserve.
