It's unbelievable what people have achieved and built in the past (without any technology) - it's simply impressive and breathtaking

Can someone please be happy/laughing with me that Google Translate turns Amy's "henge and timber monument" into "Denkmal für Hühner 🐔" in German? - Great 😂😂😂

Location signage, that is, how to locate the cuckoo stone, is non-existent! Once you pass through the gate next to Woodhenge you’ll see the National Trust sign. The stone lies way off to your right at about 3 o’clock direction from the sign. If the grass is long it won’t be visible!

No circus and no crowds like at Stonehenge. We were alone here and could look at everything in peace. On the other side of the road there are two rest areas for picnics with a beautiful view.

Like the larger megaliths that make up the outer ring of Stonehenge, the Cuckoo Stone is a sarsen stone and was once a standing stone. It has since fallen but is still a familiar landmark and is part of the wider Stonehenge Landscape. It's believed that the Cuckoo Stone was the ceremonial centrepiece for several burials around 2000 BC.

To the south lies a group of burial mounds called the Cursus Barrows. The footpath to the impressive stone circle leads across the fields with the burial mounds, which can be clearly seen and are well explained on a display board. Bone remains and various beads were found in the graves.

Sarsen stones are blocks of sandstone found in large numbers in England, it is a contraction of Saracen stone, where “Saracenic” is equivalent to “pagan”. In this respect, sarsen means something like “heathen stone”, “stone of the heathen”. The most famous sarsen stones can be found here in Stonehenge.

The Cursus Barrows is the name given to a Neolithic and Bronze Age round barrow cemetery lying mostly south of the western end of the Stonehenge Cursus, in Wiltshire, England. The cemetery contains around 18 barrows scattered along an east-to-west ridge, although some of the mounds are no longer visible. The Cursus Barrows can be seen just north of the route between the Stonehenge Visitor Centre and Stonehenge. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cursus_Barrows

You can take a nice cross country hike from the interesting historic Woodhenge ancient monument to the global icon that is Stonehenge. If you do this hike then you will save the parking and entry charges at Stonehenge (£30 ish). If you pay you get to go closer to Stonehenge (about 30m) but you get to within 70m on this walking route. You simply end up on the other side of the fence to the ticket purchasers. Plus you get a good walk out of it. Depends on what you want? Parking at start point. Hike Route - https://www.komoot.com/tour/1058100383

Parking alongside Woodhenge. Nice easy walk. Rukbag with water, a good pair of walking boots, very little shade on a hot day otherwise very enjoyable

We first considered whether we should save the entrance fee and use the outer path. However, we were not so sure about the parking situation from the northern entrance, which is why we decided to pay the entrance fee and took the bus from the visitor center to the bus stop right in front of the stones. We were a lot closer to it, especially on the south and west side, than the path of the non-payers, which leads past the stones at a greater distance. Since we will probably not have this chance again to look at the stones up close, we have not regretted the entry. By the way, cheaper with National Trust!

There are various, partly complementary, partly contradictory hypotheses about the reason and ultimate purpose of this highly complex system. These range from a self-portrait of a prehistoric alliance between two formerly hostile tribal organizations to a burial site, an astronomical observatory including a calendar for the sowing and harvesting times and a religious place of worship.

Lying within the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, Woodhenge is a Neolithic Class II henge and timber circle monument. It wasn't discovered until 1926 when a pilot took an aerial photo of the area. The monument was probably built around 2300 BC as a large burial mound. The site is managed by English Heritage and free to visit. You can visit anytime during daylight hours. Stonehenge was built in three phases, during which the stones were changed during the last phase often. The effort for the processing of the stones with the resources at that time was enormous. The origin of the first plant goes up to the time around 3100 v. Chr. Back. was built as a circular wall with a diameter of 110 meters and wooden structures in the middle. About 2500 BC The wooden buildings were replaced by stone buildings and the bluestone used here came from a quarry about 380 kilometers away in the Preseli Mountains of Wales. The approximately five-ton stones were probably transported by rafts across the River Avon to Stonehenge. The last phase of the construction lasted about 2300 to 1600 BC. During which the bluestones were rearranged and supplemented with even larger sandstones, the sarsen stones weighing up to 50 tons. Also more Walle and ditches were added to the plant of Stonehenge. After this final stage of construction, the monument of Stonehenge had three stone circles and a U-shaped structure in the center and was surrounded by two walls.

The inner stone circle consists of 5 triliths, which are placed in a horseshoe shape. The middle stone is proud 7 meters high, the other 6 meters each. In addition, there are the bluestone stones that stand in front of the trilithites to the middle of the plant. On the other hand, the outer stone circle consists of two stone circles: the outer Trilith stone circle and the concentric bluestone circle.
