A medieval fortress, destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, built on the hills of Montecchio Maggiore for its strategic position along the Via Postumia, controlling the passage between Verona and Vicenza. A previous fortification likely existed in Roman times. It is known as "Romeo's Castle" by tradition and folklore: Luigi da Porto, a military leader and man of letters, retired from military life and wrote the first novel about Romeo and Juliet in 1531 in his residence in Montorso, overlooking the two castles. In the 19th century, at the height of Romanticism, legend arose that the two castles, so close yet so far away, inspired him to imagine them as belonging to the rival families of the Montecchi and the Cappelletti. Shakespeare later drew inspiration from his work to make the tragic love story famous. Today, the castle occasionally hosts cultural events (concerts, theater, open-air cinema); it is open on weekends (see link); Free access to both the walls and the tower, from the top of which you can enjoy a magnificent 360° panorama. https://www.prolocoaltemontecchio.it/cosa-vedere/castelli-di-giulietta-e-romeo/ https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castelli_di_Romeo_e_Giulietta

The white wine of the same name, Soave, is named after the city. The place is said to have been founded around 500 AD by a tribe of the Suevi, from which the place name is derived. However, the area had already been inhabited during Roman times and was located on the important Roman road Via Postumia. The castle was first mentioned in documents in the 10th century. It belonged to the Sanbonifacio of Verona and passed to the Scaligeri in the 13th century. In the years that followed, Soave and its castle changed hands several times.

Beautiful city surrounded by imposing walls in perfect condition that completely enclose the historic center. Very well maintained by the local administration and it was not for nothing that it was awarded the most beautiful Borgo dei Borghi in Italy in 2022! Here the Soave wine is the master between cellars, wineries, taverns, etc. Not to be missed….

Many people only know the word Soave in connection with wine, which is generally true, but there is more! The wine route on which the small town is located was founded in 1999 and includes 13 communities. It is approximately 50 km long and runs at the eastern end of the province of Verona. With 24 D.O.C. growing regions, Veneto is the leader in Italy and it's hard to know where to start. with around 7,000 inhabitants - is framed by a completely preserved city wall with 24 towers. And no matter which direction you come from - the Scaliger Castle on the hill above the city is unmissable, right in the middle of the vineyards People settled here as early as the Stone Age and the Romans built a fortress to protect their rural districts. Today's city center was built under the Lombards and is therefore over 1,450 years old. Emperor Frederick I, known as Barbarossa (the one with the red beard), mentioned Soave as early as the Middle Ages around 1,200.

Found a small restaurant on the old city wall with really reasonable prices. Ate outside under umbrellas. I don’t want to advertise, but the restaurant is called “Trattoria alla Rocca” and it was very tasty 🤤

4월 21, 2022, Torre delle Carceri del Castello di Lonigo
Castle Prison Tower / Torre del Castello, Lonigo The first sources date back to 976, but it seems that the walls of Lonigo Castle were already built by the Romans (150-100 BC) who founded other colonies in Vicenza to cross the mountains guard and deal with the invasions of the Alemanni. The castle, under the Counts of Vicenza, was located on a hill along the Novo river. With the Scaliger and Venetian domains, the sieges and destruction stopped, but already in the 500s the castle of Lonigo was almost in ruins because the city of Vicenza had suspended its maintenance. Only the approximately 33 meter high keep and the Scaliger tower, which became a prison, are still preserved today. 9월 29, 2021, Vista sul castello di Illasi
Built in the 10th century, it became the property of the powerful Montecchi family in the 13th century. The castle was rebuilt and strengthened by Ezzelino III da Romano in 1243. In 1269 the building was occupied by Pulcinella delle Carceri and some exiles from Verona, fighting against Mastino I della Scala, who used it as his own refuge. In 1279 it was donated to Niccolò della Scala, son of Mastino I, by the pope Pope Niccolò III, in gratitude to the Scaligeri for their capture, in Sirmione, of a group of Albigensian heretics (Cathars). At the beginning of the 15th century it was occupied by the Republic of Venice, after wresting it from the Carraresi, allied at that time with Guglielmo della Scala, illegitimate son of Cangrande II della Scala, elected by them as lord of Verona in 1404. For his military merits, the Venetians in 1509 granted Illasi as a fief to their valiant leader Count Girolamo Pompei, known as "Malanchino", whose family had boasted rights in those places for centuries. The leader deserved the credit for having captured and translated into Venetian prisons on 8 August of the same year, the Marquis of Mantua Francesco II Gonzaga, who had set out to conquer Legnago.
